4th Grade students have been working on composing a piece of music to fit certain passages from the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. This is a book that they read last year and are familiar with the story. Each group choose 1 of 3 passages to read out loud and make their music fit the mood of the passage. Below are some videos of these amazing compositions. Above is a group from Mrs. Buxton's class. They used their prior experience to include a piece of music they learned outside of school in addition to including instrument from the music room to fit the passage they choose. Above is another group with a different passage from The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Can you tell that it is a different mood than the previous group?
Has listening to a song ever put you in a certain mood? How does music make you feel a certain way? These are questions that the 4th graders discussed this week in music. We listened to 2 opposite songs and did a Visible Thinking Routine: Hear, Think, Wonder. Below are examples of the songs we listened to and some of the 4th grade responses to what they thought the mood of the song felt like to them. Our 1st Graders have been working hard at learning a song in a different language! Dha Dhin Dhin Na is a song that comes from India. To learn the song, students read iconic notation which helps them know the melody of the song. Each student had a chance to play an ostinato on the xylophone while the others sang and pointed to the icons.
The 3rd Grade classes discussed what the word Genre meant and came up with "A way to categorize something." We talked about different genres of books, movies, tv shows, video games etc. and related it to musical genres.Students were then asked to listen to 4 different songs and describe what they hear in the music to help them figure out the genre of the song. We had a great 1st week of music! Students helped create our bulletin board by creating their own music note.
